N E W M A N C O L L E G E S C H O L A R S H I P F U N D P R O J E C T Introduction Newman College is established in 1964 by dioceses of Kothamangalam to meet the higher education needs of the people in Idukki district of Kerala. It is bacon of hope and opportunity for many young men and women. Many of those who graduated from Newman College have a successful careen and a decent life. Purpose There are about 1000 students attending the Newman College now. They are enrolled in different Bachelor’s programs and Master’s Program. Recent increases in fees and other expenses made it difficult for families to send their kids to college. Many families can not afford the college expenses especially when more than one child is attending the college. Even though Kerala state has the best record in literacy, education and health services it is not perfect. The higher education needs improvement and focus. Curriculum has to be revised based on the needs of twenty-first century. The facilities in the institutions have to be improved to take advantage of the developments in information technology. At the same time, it is important to make sure that higher education is affordable to ordinary people. In order to explore opportunities within and abroad, quality education and experience is necessary. When we improve the quality, we should be prepared to pay a bigger bill. Currently there are no programs to assist students in their financial needs or increase the intellectual competition among students. So we propose a scholarship fund which should be used to assist student s in financial needs and promote intellectual competition among students. Newman College Scholarship funds aims to help al least 10 percent students enrolled in the college every year and is limited to students receive admission in merit, without any quota or reservations. Administration The Newman College Scholarship fund will be an endowment established by Friends of India and sponsored by Newman College Alumni Association of America. The amount to the fund will be added time by time. The interest from the account will be used for scholarships every year. The principal of Newman College will recommend the students for the scholarship. Friends of India will monitor the selection and dispersal of the scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded as a check payable to the student from the fund account. The available amount from the scholarship fund should be direct payment to the student and can not be used for administration purposes. Beneficiaries The scholarship will be awarded in yearly basis. All the students currently enrolled in Newman College and received admission in merit, without any quota or reservation, is qualified to apply. The scholarship is limited to those who apply for it. The application should be certified by the college principal. Friends of India will verify the accuracy of the information if the student is selected for the scholarship. Those who receive the highest points will receive the scholarship. The maximum points will be 100.
